A first-half Karim Benzema goal was enough to secure victory for
Real Madrid over Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg.
It should have been a greater winning margin for the La Liga side, who
enjoyed most of the chances, even if PSG began by keeping possession
well.
After 23 minutes, Benzema gave Real the lead with a strong strike from
distance that crept inside the post to Salvatore Sirigu's left-hand
side.
It was no more than Real deserved after a strong period of pressure
that saw Sirigu make an impressive double save from Benzema and
Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ezequiel Lavezzi then had a glorious chance from close range 38 minutes
in but he failed to connect with a knock down from Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
He had another good effort in the second half, forcing Diego Lopez into a sprawling save after 59 minutes.
Madrid continued to press in the second half with an Angel Di Maria
corner causing problems in the PSG box while Mesut Ozil also flashed an
effort wide, after good work from Ronaldo.
The Portuguese had a late free-kick saved as it remained 1-0, as Real boss Carlo Ancelotti got one over his former employers.
